Last month I decided that I wanted to learn to sew. I have two friends/coworkers that sew and they always come in talking about everything they have made. A cute dress for their daughter, a pretty purse for a friend.....and I wanted in on that action!
I've been searching for a hobby, something that I can escape to, something that is all mine. I loved doing pottery, but I can't afford a wheel and I don't want to dedicate three hours a week to a class. It isn't something I can easily do at home. Stained glass was enjoyable, but it is PRICEY and doesn't result in anything terribly useful. So....I thought sewing would be something that I could easily do at home AND is productive and money saving to boot! (as long as you don't go nuts buying expensive fabrics.)
So, I got this bug under my skin to start sewing and I immediately started researching. I went to Joann's to look at fabric....and got talking to the sewing machine salesperson. Let me tell you....I was SO close to buying a $600 machine!! Thankfully, my dear friend, Melanie, talked me back to my senses. I did further research and found a reasonable $150 machine that had lots of options, but would be basic enough for a beginner. It is a Brother XR9000 and I love it!
I set up a portion of the storage room downstairs to become my sewing room. It is absolutely freezing, but it is perfect....you can hardly hear Quinn crying at all when she is napping....sweeeeet! ;)
I've created this blog to chronicle my sewing learning process. All the triumphs, all the tragedies and everything in between. I've already done a few projects with moderate success and one near tragedy....seriously, I almost lost an eye. Lesson #1: Always sew with the right sized needle or else it will bend, break and shoot directly into your eye (almost at least).
I'll post more later with my finished products and hopefully much more to follow! Thanks for reading!
